Joyce Harper

Joyce is a Professor in Human Genetics and Embryology at University College London, where she is Education Lead for the Institute for Women's Health, Faculty Graduate Tutor and Chair of the School of Life and Medical Sciences Education Domain (joyceharper.com). She started work as a clinical embryologist after completing her PhD in 1987.

In 1992 she started work on PGD at the Hammersmith Hospital. As part of UCL Centre for PGD (ucl.ac.uk/PGD), Joyce ran her first PGD workshop as a joint venture with the Hammersmith Hospital in 1996 as she felt it was important to give hands on training in these highly specialized techniques. Also in 1996 Joyce established the famous MSc in Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine and added to this another MSc in Reproductive Science and Women's Health in 2009 (www.instituteforwomenshealth.ucl.ac.uk/education/masters). Over the years she has trained hundreds of people in embryology and PGD. She has run workshops in many countries, including South Africa, Australia and India. She has published over 130 scientific papers, written two text books and is very actively involved in many aspects of ESHRE and the HFEA. She co-established the ESHRE PGD Consortium and has been involved with many education activities in ESHRE including helping establish the clinical embryology exams and running workshops and pre congress courses.
